| 61 | EAA Interim Inspection (Ribs) | 9/8/2006 |
| | I arranged for my first meeting for a review of my work. I spoke with my EAA Chapter AB/DAR and tech counselor Joe Gauthier at AirVenture and we decided that it would be a good idea to have my 5 ribs reviewed. Our arrangement was to have Ken Terrio, builder of a Pober Jr. Ace and a key participant in the construction of the Pietenpol Air Camper under construction at OshKosh, meet with me and see if the work is acceptable. I took my Main Jig, my Flipside Jig, a sample of a few of the gussets, and the aluminum pressure plates and described my process in good detail and offered to let him destroy one of the ribs of his choosing (to test). I told him I already pushed sample joints to failure and noted that the glue joint wasn't the weakest member of the joint, but either the plwood or the capstrip was where the breakage occurs and further noted that there are pictures that document that on this site. He was happy that I had performed the test to my own satisfaction and didn't see a need to ruin a perfectly good rib. He concluded his inspection adding "I'd give you an A" which was very comforting. Back to rib building after a brief hiatus! Man hours: 1 |
| 60 | More Ribs | 7/9/2006 |
| | Yesterday I produced a rib. Today I back-gusseted it and started a new rib. On the 4th of July I got up early before heading out and did the 3rd rib. The process is similar so nothing to log other than time. Since I can back-gusset one, and cut sand and fit another and clean up in about 2.5 hours per rib I'm estimating total time on these 3 ribs. Now the total is 5. Man hours: 7.5 |
